This indie developer wants you to pirate their game if you can’t afford it

"You can always buy a copy later if you think the game was worth your money”

Indie developer Black Tabby Games has encouraged fans to pirate Slay The Princess after a clip of the game went viral.

Slay The Princess is an adventure role-playing game where players have to kill the princess. “She will do everything in her power to stop you,” reads the Steam description. “She’ll charm, and she’ll lie, and she’ll promise you the world, and if you let her, she’ll kill you a dozen times over. You can’t let that happen. Don’t forget, the fate of the world rests on your shoulders.”

The game was originally released in October last year but has seen a surge in popularity after gaming Youtuber Markiplier uploaded part one of a playthrough. The video received over 1.3million views over the weekend, while a second part has racked up almost 500,000 in less than 14 hours.

However, developers Black Tabby Games have encouraged potential gamers to experience Slay The Princess for themselves, rather than watching others play it.

“For folks tuning in to the Markiplier Slay the Princess series — if you haven’t played on your own yet, the best viewing experience will be if you watch it after playing. The game is *wildly* reactive to your choices, to the level of every playthrough being personalised,” they wrote on social media.

“Also you should watch the Markiplier Let’s Play, the first episode was extremely good,” they added in a follow-up that’s been hidden by X (via Eurogamer).

“If you can’t afford the game in general, pirate it! No skin off our back, and you can always buy a copy later if you think the game was worth your money,” they added, with another post explaining that Steam should be able to pick up saves from a pirated copy, if a player does eventually buy it. “But please prioritise your own financial well-being.”

A console version of Slay The Princess is due for release later this year.
